Sunena Gupta commenced her Kathak training at the tender age of seven under Guru Puja Rajeev. She then pursued her training under the tutelage of Guru Shamit Malik, and then moved to the Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society (SIFAS), in 2009, where she began her SIFAS journey under Guru Anjum Bharti and continued under Guru Nayantara Parpia. All of their immense guidance and support have played an integral part in developing Sunena as a dancer. She has recently trained under Guru Jyotika Joshi for two years, where she was able to develop her hobby into a passion. She is currently learning under Guru Mulla Afsar Khan, whose relentless efforts has further stretched her potential and advanced the young dancer into a solo performer.
Through her journey thus far, her passion and sincere efforts have been rewarding. She was very recently honored with the ‘Natya Visharad’ title in her 8th year diploma examination and is the first SIFAS student to have a Kathak Manch Pravesh. In addition, Sunena has been a regular, and highly appreciated performer in a plethora of events including SIFAS’s annual academy days, the SIFAS Music and Dance Festival, Singapore’s annual Navrathri festivals, as well as at countless more local events and the highly prestigious Kala Manjari Book Launch, and the Welcome ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Singapore.
Sunena has also been developing her group choreography skills in her school, United World College. Two notable choreographies of hers were a pure Kathak piece presented at the biannual charity show titled ‘Safar’, and a fusion piece between Kathak, Bharatnatyam and Odissi, which was selected as the opening item for her school’s United Nations evening, and for the opening ceremony of the prestigious International Round Square Conference.
In addition to pursuing dance, Sunena has also undertaken piano and percussion training, which has given her the opportunity to perform in the Esplanade on four occasions and in a musical production of West Side Story. Sunena’s achievements have also extended to her excellence in her school’s Senior Basketball and Netball teams.
